<<The split in the embryonic horn bud continues down along the skull to the eye socket>>
There is a lot of contention about this idea. Louisa Gidney is an archaeologist in Britain who both keeps sheep and researches into archaeological remains of sheep, including 4 horned ones. One of the skulls she takes around with her (one from her own flock) demonstrates conclusively that a severe split eyelid in life leaves absolutely no evidence on the skull, nor is there a suture line between the horn buds and the eyelid. She can differentiate a 2horned skull from a 4 horned one however, by a different arrangement of suture lines on the back of the skull.
We are involved in an investigation here in Britain where we are trying to establish the precise relationship between SUED and the polycerate type and the inheritance of these traits. This involves collecting and collating stats initially, then we are hoping to attract in an academic who can continue the work into gene level study. I expect it will be several years before we get anywhere ! It would be good to involve the 4 horned breeds in America too although the logistics are daunting ! Are there more than Jacob and Navajo Churro in the US ? Here we have Jacob, Manx Laoghtan and Hebridean as the three polycerate breeds.
