[Jacob-list] Hay

$180 per ton for good quality alfalfa for this year is very reasonable. 4X4X8 bales will not weigh that much. We are now salvaging our soybean crop for hay because of the need for forages and lack of pod fill in this area. I expect to sell it for about $150 per ton. We lost the first and 4th crops of alfalfa and grass because of the late freeze and a 7 week period with NO rain in August. (It was a really long month.) I would not expect soybean hay to be suitable for sheep because of the coarse stems, but if you have to use it, has good protein levels. People here are paying $20 for round bales of corn stalks. 50 lb square bales of orchardgrass are going for $8.

A weeks ago I went to my usual hay source 45 min from here. They told me they ran out of hay and are getting it from Kanas for $180 a large sq bale what 4x4 by 8 ft. They were selling off their cows . I called every one I could think of a sm bale of corse junk is $4. They leave most of it on the ground. Grain has gone up another dollar . The guy who told the majority of my animals in the spring has found round bales in Tenn, but their wells are drying up in the Mountains here in NC so he can't take the rest of my animals . I'm in Charlotte and have no idea how to feed them thru the winter if we don't get more rain. Any body do rain dances cheap? Katherine Wisor, Creeks end farm

How widespread is the hay shortage this year? We are located in Ohio, and everyone in our area is wondering how their animals will survive the winter. I am prepared to sell most of our flock, but still want to retain some old Puddleduck Sir James daughters and several other of our ewes with old bloodlines. Does anyone know of a source for decent hay?
