Tammy,
The time of year to put in the ram depends on your
Spring weather. I put my ram in Sept/ Oct. so I have
early babies, but after the worst part of our rainy
season. People back east wait longer cause they still
have snow later in the Spring. We all want the best
conditions for the lambs so look at your local weather
and when it is the best in Spring and count back 5
months. If you are going to show the lambs, the
earlier in the year after Jan. 1 the better cause the
judges tend to put the largest lambs first in ribbons.
I shear in the month before the lambs are due. It
makes the birth cleaner and there is a break in the
wool when the ewe lambs so might as well cut about
that time.
If you are on a scrape program farm I would not
lease unless the leasing farm is on the same year or
more of the program. They are getting a little more
permissive about rams joining a flock here in
California but usually if you bring in an outside
sheep you loose all the years you have been on the
program and go back to zero. NOt sure how they feel
about a ram that has visited another flock, especially
if they are not on a scrapie farm. I personally would
not buy sheep from a farm that is not on some kind of
a scrapie program. That is just a personal preference
as if I ever had it on this farm I would not like to
have to destroy all my babies. I am sure there are
multiple opinions about this within Jacob breeders and
I am not saying it as a challenge to anyone who feels
differently. Just something I would think about if
leasing.
We all love newbie questions cause we were all
newbies too. Victoria
