The regulations for exportation of ruminant breeding stock are pretty much
outlined in the new Voluntary Scrapie guidelines for 2007. We are changing
over our flock to the Export certification program which is in line with
Canada's program. You can grandfather in 5 of your years in our scrapie
program if you sign up... I do believe by next October. The regulations are
basically: You have to be in the program 7yrs. or if you are already
certified then an additional 2yrs. to become export certified, close the ewe
flock, and of coarse be in the voluntary program. You also have to have a
minimum of 2 sheep 3rd. eyelid tested for actual scrapie prions per year and
no less than 30 in the 7yr. period. I think the 2 sheep per year thing is
even after you become certified to maintain your status. They also really
appreciate it if you have all of your breeding stock genotyped, because you
cannot use just RR stock for the third eyelid test if you have QR and QQ
stock available for testing although its not mandatory, also all culls over
14mo. old must be inspected by a program veterinarian or be sent to an USDA
inspected slaughter house where they will be inspected onsight. If you want
to be in the program you can contact your state vet, and they will help
clarify all the regulations if they have read them yet : ) . When I called
the head state vet had been dreading reading them so he hadn't, we where the
first in California to call so we both figured out the regulations
together. If all the testing is putting you off, ask your program vet if
they can do the testing as part of their yearly quota, they have X amount of
sheep they are supposed to test anyway, and usually don't get the chance to
do so so you may even be helping them out. There are a lot more
regulations, I just don't have time to look them up right now but I can when
I get back this evening if anyone's interested. Of coarse that's just the
scrapie end of it, I'm sure there are other tests that have to be done just
like for between states. I'm not sure, but I think that for export w/o being
in the program the sheep would have to go through quarantine just like they
would from any other country which lasts 5yrs.

Hope that helps and I'll get back to reading that thing! I wish they could
just write in simple bullet format, but then it wouldn't have that
government flare!
