[Jacob-list] Urinary caluli in wethered sheep

I have a friend who is very attached to her Jacob wether I gave her
several years ago. Apparently he is suffering from urinary calculi, and
has had an operation to remove the stones. He is off his feed but feeling
well and moving around happily according to my friend. She called the vet
about him being off his feed, and he suggested the sheep needed to be put
down. I know she doesn't want the sheep to go through any unneccesary pain
and suffering, but she understandably doesn't want to put him down when he
seems quite happy.
Any suggestions or experience with this?
