Sorry to have kept ya'll in suspense for this long--last week was a killer at work and VERY hot for Colorado.

Yes, we got a very nice little ram from Jennifer and Brian, I believe they are the proud possessors of a nice purple ribbon on his brother...Lorraine Perry did well with her fleeces and the colored Sheep breeders Coop booth had probably one of it's best years.  Hopefully, next year there will be more of you guys there!

I would suggest having a shepherd that is experienced in tubing show you how
o do it. One of our market lambs choked and began to bloat last year and if
he wouldn't have coughed out the obstruction the gentleman I purchased her
rom was on his way with a tube. It is a 1/2 in piece of clear flexible but
ot flimsy hosing (same as an aquarium gravel siphon hose) with the end
ounded used to push the obstruction down. What he suggested to do to
revent the problem next time was to put round river rocks big enough that
hey can't eat them but small enough that they can move them around a
ittle in the bottom of the grain trough. Rocks roughly the size of your
ist or a little larger. It makes them work for the grain so they can't eat
t as fast. We haven't had any of our Jacobs choke, but I give grain in a
eeder with quite a bit of loose hay in it so they have to hunt for it. If
he hay is still in flakes they would still have a good chance at
hoking I imagine.

I have a jacob ewe who seems to have choked on her grain tonight. She
appears to still have some lodged in her airway. She's a little frothy at
the mouth as she's been trying to clear her airway. I can see her
attempting to swallow and her airway is a little noisy. she is not in a
panic but clearly still has some obstruction. Thank you.

It's okay. Ewe has managed to clear her throat but what does one do
normally when this happens. I have had one of my shetlands recently choke
also on grain. I patted her back like I did my infants years ago but it was
just instinct. It makes me nervous about graining even my ewes who are
lactating. Many thanks. Pam

ingston, Ontario, we cross the border at watertown, NY or Ogdensburg.

I've had several lambs choke and I beat on both sides of their chest at the same
ime and rub their throat. This seems to break it loose and are immediatly
etter. It's so scary to watch! There is so much excitement when the feed comes
ut and everyone is rushing to eat as much as they can, as fast as they can.
eeding hay first would probably help, except we feed the big round bales, so
hat doesn't work for us. I just make sure everyone is done eating before I
eave, so I can be there, just in case.
I just want to say that I enjoy reading all your messages and have learned a lot
rom all your expierences. Keep up the good work.
