I was just browsing the SAFF site and looking at the advertisers' websites. I ran across this site: http://www.therosefield.com/Articles2.htm#adopted_Darla:_
It's very well written with lots of useful information. I got my first donkey more than 40 years ago - the foal from a pair of sheep guardian donkeys. I had no interest in sheep at the time, but my sister and I sure did love that donkey (well, donkeys since my Mom thought the older foal might get lonely, so he came home with us too and then there was the rescue donkey that showed up a few years later). My sister rode old Sugarfoot on our riding club trail rides when her mare was pregnant and we raced them with sulkies at the county fair. They were great fun and a donkey can hold a dog trot on a trail ride forever! Even though they knew our dogs, they would never allow our dogs into the pasture. Dave fell in love with a neighbor's donkey just over ten years ago and come home with a sadly mistreated yearling jack. We later were given a lovely black jenny and Strider and Delilah produced two great jennys. Both have been with the sheep from just a few days old. I have to say that I don't think I'd ever have any other guardian for my sheep. Not too long ago, some people were in looking at the sheep and a child made a lunge at one of the ewes (Daphne). Daphne moved under Lili's belly for protection, peeking out from between Lili's front legs to check on the danger.
