Hi All,

I am having a late lambing this year. My first ewe (a
Jacob cross) gave birth to a dead lamb this evening.
I can't see anything wrong with it, and I was there
when it was born. This was a first time mom. The
lamb was a little on the small side, but not unusually
small. My efforts to get it breathing failed. Anyone
have ideas of what could have happened?

My more pressing question: This is the first time I
have had a ewe lose a lamb at birth. Am I supposed to
milk the mom a little or a lot or not at all so she
doesn't pop from all that milk? Should this be done
right away or the next day and how often?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel very
lucky that I have never lost any newborn lambs before.
I guess there is a first time for everything.

On a good note, an hour and a half later, another ewe
(purebred Jacob) gave birth to a bouncing baby girl.
A real beauty.

Sharon Hill
