I love machine knitting! There is a good book called "The Prolific Knitting Machine" that deals with knitting fabric and then making it into hats, sweaters, capes, etc, with no shaping on the machine. For a hat, you make a rectangle on the machine, full it, sew the side seam into a tube, sew the top closed, and then shape the top by diagonal stitching. It's easier to do than to explain. In an old Spin-Off, there's a great article by Connie Delaney (I think I have the name right. She's the woman that does the SpinCraft patterns) in an issue with a machine knitting theme. Connie knits yards of fabric, felts it, and makes all sorts of things - stuffed toys, vests - anything that you would use felt for.
