Tom and Judy,
You hear some horror stories because that is the ones you hear. In the last
19 years of lambing and up to 60 ewes a year, I have delivered only 3 ewes.
One was a Jacob ewe that had a single with middle of the back presented to
the birth canal. One was a Finn ewe with pregnancy toxemia and quadruplets.
And one was a FinnX Lincoln ewe with quintuplets that tried to have two at
the same time. Won't fit.
The most important things you will need are a notebook to record births,
eartags to tag the lambs while you can still catch them, many people use a
digital camera to insure they can match up lamb with momma later, and a good
cup of coffee (or tea, Betty).
This doesn't mean that all will make it; but you can expect far more success
than failure.
