Last year I had 3 nonJacobs (2 Montadales and a Katahdin) in with my big Jacob ram and we got 2 polled ewes and a ram that went back to the neighbor contributing the ewes. I used one of the ewes in a youth drawing at the fair and a 12 YO girl picked the KatahdinX and her grandmother bought the lovely black MontadaleX for her own son. The Katahdin had very Jacob markings but the other was almost pure black. Anyone else doing fiber experiments? I had another offer from an adult to buy the black ewe before the fair. It is another way to publicize Jacobs esp for people that can't countenance the horns. I just have the 2 girls this year, so if I get a ram, I think I should wether him immediately unless someone pipes up and wants him early on as a ram.

I have a nice tunis/Jacob wether lamb who spent the summer at my Mom's farm and is pretty tame and agreeable and can sell him reasonably if you are nearby. My Mom named him Smoky and I feel guilty sending him off to market. His brother went to the butcher last week and I have his lovely black pelt. Smoky is a bit smaller and is polled.

I try to keep my rams confined alone for a minimum of time. OUr Jacob ram, Dude, was a bit rough on the wethers and my old TUnis/Romney ewe I gave him for company so he spent over a month alone and did a lot of damage to his stall but he's out now and has calmed down a lot.

Well, a mixed Thanksgiving here. I got the turkey in the oven in
record time only to go up to the barn and find that my Blue Faced
Leicester wether had died.
He had been in shaky health so I am not entirely surprised. Now my
Jacob ram is all by himself. Will this affect his temperment? He can
see the girls from his paddock, if they are on the right side of
theirs. I really am not sure I want to go eunuch hunting this time of
year but if it would be better for the boy, I will. I have a gut sense
that I should get him a companion but am hoping that is not necessarily
so..... I also am not sure I am ever going to leave the primitives
again. If I want a white fleece, I may just buy one.
On a positive note, I followed the advice of some articles I have been
reading and brined my turkey before roasting and came out with the best
tasting, moistest bird I have ever made.
