Hi,

Tonight I had my first "head only" presentation. Came
home to find Heather ready to pop out her lambs.
Locked her up and fed everybody (including a hungry
Heather--between her contractions). Out came Lamb # 1
without complications. We hung around for Lamb # 2 to
make sure everything was fine. Out comes head on lamb
2 right on time---no feet!

OOPS.... PANIC..... I couldn't remember where my
Managing Your Ewe book was, so knew I needed help from
a shepherd. Lots of phone numbers started flying
around in my head. I sent Bjorn back in to get his
brother to get phone.... Couldn't remember Neal's
number in panic, but managed after a couple false
starts to get Kelly Foster's number to come out of the
depths of my brain. I had 3 or 4 other shepherds to
try as it isn't easy catching somebody at the phone
when you are in desperate straits.

She coached me through the most long and successful
birth I have attended for probably 45 minutes to an
hour. The exercise books don't mention this one!

Head only presentations have to be shoved BACK INSIDE
MOM all the way----against all mom's better
judgments!!! Then, you have to go in, find the front
legs and get them gently moved forward and into
position. The whole process would have gone better
had I not missed that the head had dropped down in the
process of repositioning, making it once again
impossible to deliver baby. After getting that all
worked out, Heather delivered a rather large and very
tired ram lamb.

As of this writing, mom and babies are both doing
well. I will dose her with antibiotics this morning
when I get up again.

Mary Ellen
