Hi Chris, Here in N. Calif. we are selinium poor. We
found that the Purina sheep ground salt that has the
selinium is great. With sheep you want the ground
salt, not a block because of teeth breakage. We let
the sheep have free access to this ground salt and
also offer baking soda to help their rumen in little
containers on the fence. My daughter has goats and
they can have salt blocks with copper but that would
be very bad for the sheep. If you keep the 2 different
kinds of animals in seperate areas then they can each
have their own kind of salt. When we had my
daughter's goats here with the sheep she needed to
copper bolus the goats once a month for the copper
they needed.. That is an option when the 2 kinds of
animals are together in the same area.
One of the things she uses to know when to copper
bolus is when the goats' coats stop shining. The
other thng is that if you are raising babies or
milking the goats then the supplements they need are
different than the sheep need with babies. My
daughter's goats are show goats and dairy goats so
they need to be in top conditions, so maybe this would
be over kill for your goats. Do you know the copper
content of your soil and the vedg. they eat?.She tends
to go with a higher protein hay than we do with the
sheep.
