So sorry you lost your lambs. A couple of times I have had a ewe pawing 
excessively at one lamb of twins...it only happens when the lamb is down resting 
within a few hours of birth or if the lamb is slow to get going. It may be a 
continuation of the pre-birth pawing at the ground but by this time the ewe is 
scent-orientated on the lamb/birth fluids. 
Or maybe it's checking the lamb to see if it's alive - if fit, the lamb jumps 
up and there's no harm done. So it's not impossible that your newly born lamb 
was very weak at birth and likely to die whether you were there to watch over 
them or not. These things happen sadly.
