Genetic testing of rams makes more sense than testing all ewes. There are
three codons 171, 154 and 136 that appear to be involved with scrapie. One
source for the test is GeneCheck, Ft.Collins, CO USA ... about $20 for codon
171, 3about $30 for 171 and 136, about $50 for all three.

The test is also available thru Guelph but don't know the cost.

Normally an RR at 171 suggest low suseptability and an RR will have an A at
136. There is some concern because a Japanese? sheep with RR and AA? at 136
had a form of scrapie.

In England testing for the three codons suggested that hill breeds (including
Jacobs) had a lower suseptability compared to down breeds but cases have been
reported in Jacobs ... and Soay (primitive type).
