[Jacob-list] Lots of lambs/scrapie programs

I would and plan to buy rams from unenrolled people as they don't effect my
enrollment date. My ewe flock is pretty much where I want it now, but I do
like to change rams and prefer to just have 1 ram at a time. I am thinking
of sending some ewes to breed this year at a nearby farm with a different,
although close, enrollment date. I don't know if I would buy ewes from an
unenrolled farm at this point, though.

The main concern I have is when and if I do get my flock certified and can't
use rams from unenrolled flocks or if they change the rules. By that time,
I'll probably have exhausted my sources of local unrelated rams so I'll have
to look at bringing in rams from further away and I know there are some
other Jacob flocks in the scrapie programs who have been around longer than
me anyway.

I'm actually hoping the programs catch on in popularity as they are pretty
easy to deal with and are a valuable source of information both for the
government monitoring scrapie and farmers learning how to watch for and
prevent scrapie.

newer entry

That's what I wonder. How seriously does my choice of one program or the
other limit my potential sales or purchases (which, living in CA, seem
somewhat limited anyway).
