Subject: [Jacob-list] horns
Luckily he only has two horns, otherwise I would be afraid to go in the pen with him.
I have never been hurt by a Jacob ram, and would actually rather handle the four horned ones. By grabbing the end of the horn, you have quite a bit of leverage and can steer them around. Rams [supposidly] can not charge with their head down...catch a horn, pull the head up, and if need be, lift the front end off the ground and you can do pretty much what you need to with them. Jacob rams are so dominant, they just assume that they have nothing to prove once their pecking order is established; this is not the case with dumb polled breeds.
My husband wants to get her de-horned. While part of me is apalled at the thought, another part of me doesn't want the other ewes to miscarry (they aren't due to lamb until late April because we got a ram so late and she came to us already bred) because she butts them. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences for me?
Instead of one feed trough, try three. The ewe will get tired of running from place to place to hog the grain. Hay shouldn't be a problem because it is there most of the time.
