We also breed the first year. Last year we left the ewe lambs in with the ewes at breeding time and had no problems...they just took a few weeks later than the adults..all of them singled and kept their condition. This year we had more room, so kept the lambs out a while and kept them on better pasture/hay and more alfalfa than the ewes were getting.(We don't feed grain.) Will introduce them sometime soon. Katrina, Chicory Lane.

I'm just curious. How many of you breed your ewe lambs the first year? What criteria do you use to decide?

I breed my ewes the first year. The sole criteria is this: Do they conceive?! So far, I haven't had a problem with any of those births.
