My Jacobs are still on pasture due to the warm weather
we have been having. In early December I will start
feeding them alfalfa hay. I always keep sheep and goat
blocks out for them at all times so they are sure to
get the vitamins and minerals they need. I also feed a
small amount of cracked corn, whole oats, wheat and
lamb balancer with BVT, a coccidiostat. This small
amount of grain keeps the sheep where they come
running when I call them. I feed them in an enclosure
so I can shut the gate and catch them when I need to
and visually inspect them to catch any problems early.
I also believe that flushing the ewes before breeding
helps to increase twinning. After the ewes are bred I
cut back on the grain so the ewes do not become fat
then increase it again shortly before lambing begins.
I continue to feed the ewes with nursing lambs a small
amount of grain daily as well as lambs that are going
to be used for eating. The taste of the lamb is
delicious. We are having leg of lamb cooked in an oval
crock pot with red potatoes and carrots for
Thanksgiving. DELICIOUS!
