I don't want to second guess a vet, but a thought occurred to me that it is fairly hard to induce polio in sheep. However, simple shock would have much the same effect and do it more quickly. Shock can shut down the digestive tract resulting in fairly severe ketosis and rather quick death. I have seen this in sheep that have been chased [but not injured] by dogs.
