Fred Horak here. It is colostrum. The thick, heavy, yellow to light
"orange" colostrum can be related to a tough delivery (was the lambs' sack
yellow to light "oragnge" at birth?) or to a protein or vitamin shortage
during preganancy. We have seen it several times. In each case, the lamb
sucked hard and often enough to get adequate colostrum (seemed like sort of a
concentrate?) and did just fine.
Keep an eye on the lambs; watch to see the belly fill, watch for scours,
check the ears for temp/or thermometer. Colostrum keeps it warm, prevents
constipation and the trots. Watch the udder to see that both sides are being
used. If it would make you feel better, a warm moist towel on her udder
might be used. Fred
