Congratulations on your ewe lamb!
I think you are talking about Japanese Beetles grubs.  We have alot of them around here.  One 
year we had some serious rain and the grubs all came to the surface.  The dogs spent days 
eating them - not a pretty sight! - but that summer we had the only Japanese Beetle free 
garden around while neighboring vegetable gardens were being destroyed by the beetles.
