Mediocrity as defined by other sheep breeds who want bigger and better and
softer and finer. We want a well balanced Jacob with characteristic fleece,
hornset and build. An individual sheep. Not one of whom those outside the
breed characterize as "how do you tell them apart. They all look the same to
me."

I want a smallish animal with a balanced body, balanced horns, balanced
color in a fleece that is consistent in its "hand" front to back. Balance.
Breeding choices that give me animals that don't have deformed heads, bad
jaws and eyes because the hornset is too close or can't graze because the
horns go forward instead of back. Ewes with solid hornsets and not scurs or
wobbly horns. Rams that pass on their characteristics to their lambs - ewes
that birth easily and are good mothers. These are all the results of
choices that we as breeders make. If the breed of Jacob is important to us,
we make careful choices. I realize that maintaining the breed is not the
only goal of some Shepard's, and that's fine. It is important to me to
breed for what I consider to be a typical Jacob.
