It occurred to me recently that we Jacob breeders may be the only ones who have mediocrity as a breeding goal.
* We want medium sized sheep. I am equally adamant about culling overly large, round boned sheep AND dwarfish, undersized, unthrifty ones.
*We want "medium" fleeces. We don't want either overly coarse or fine fleeces.
* We want medium coloration. We don't want them to be too white or too dark. [Though normal patterning is important.]
* We want them to be primitive, but not too primitive. Excessive hairiness in the fleece is certainly a primitive characteristic, but is less likely to be a Jacob characteristic.
* Last but not least, we want medium hornset. We don't want those jokers to be either too far apart or too close together. This means that we have to tolerate medium heads as well. The really nice horns on those pretty English Jacobs are on sheep with big heads. [This is the "Little Pumpkin Head" theory of horn selection.]
