Mary and everyone-
I think the most basic difference between card grading and showing is that while showing only allows one animal to win (and usually is based on only a few characteristics), in card grading, all the animals could be labeled as excellent.
The sheep is being judged not against the other animals in the ring, but against a written account of what breeders consider admirable in the breed. The whole animal is considered. Some characteristics are weighed more heavily than others. In the end, the animal is given a color (out of 4 colors). This color represents whether the judges found the animal to be a good representative (and of breeding quality)of the breed or not.
Does anyone know if it was started by the English?Sounded kind of fun to me. Katrina.
Heather & all,
The JSBA has always had a breed standard. If you have received the new Guidebook, you will see the breed standards included. Someone had asked what card grading is. I am sure there are others on the list who have a clearer idea than I have of what card grading entails. I believe that the sheep are graded as excellent, good, fair, or unsuitable, rather than a first place, second place, etc.
I like the idea of a Jacob fleece contest (shorn), but have serious reservations about awards for "best markings", "best ears", etc. I think the total animal should be evaluated, instead of focusing on color patterns or another single trait.
