[Jacob-list] Tetanus and horses

Hi Everyone-
I am wondering if anyone out there can explain to me the connection between tetanus and exposure to horses. I have often heard/read that tetanus in sheep is only to be worried about if horses have been on the property in the past...

As far as I am aware there has been no horses on our property in the recent past, maybe even since tractors were invented. :) However, the nearby horse farms have been kind enough to bring manure for us to compost and use on our fields. What is it exactly that increases the risk of tetanus? Does it require horses to have been on the property...i.e. something related to the shoeing of horses, or is there another reason?

Thanks, Katrina Lefever
