I got this report from another Houstonian. He has electricity. Connie lost it last night while she was talking to Lorelei from her poarch and "another" transformer blew up.
Best,

To those lucky enough to have power - we have survived a pretty potent blow from Ike.  Most of the area is without electricity and the water supply has been determined to be contaminated.

>From my vantage point northwest at the western end of Oak Forest out 290, there is a war zone like look to the area.  Mostly trees down and damaged and office buildings along 290 with blown windows.  Much worse damage in southern part of Houston (below I-10).  I consider myself lucky to have only lost my backyard fencing and a few tree limbs.  The same Oak trees I watched bend to the ground 25 years ago during Alicia withstood the best Ike could give and there is still a second story on the house.  Electricity here, which went off at 1:30 a.m. was miraculously restored at 2:55 p.m.  Although tolerable with the windows open, you rapidly understand the miserable heat and humidity of Houston and the surrounding area when there are no fans or air condiditioning to move the air.

My hope is that our friends and neighbors came thru this night as well or better than I did.  Of course I know they did not and now we go about the task of rebuilding an entire area.  I thought it justice that after the winds and rain subsided, the one thing in my front yard still standing sturdy was my VOTE DEMOCRATIC for CHANGE sign.  Somehow, surviving all of this mess sends good vibs for the remaining time before November 4.
