[AGL] Rememberin names

Hi, boys and girls havn't been able to get on line as i was too crippled up 
to walk to the wifi cafe and the clutch on my truck went out. mobile again 
now and found some nice doctors that will take my medicare...so hoping to 
get my legs fixed before too long. 

 


Jeff, good to read you, hope this gets thru, i'm still not havin 
particularly reliable results posting to this list. 


There was a thing on Scientific American Frontiers, that show on PBS that 
Alan Alda hosted, about memory research, that found that memories tied to a 
strong emotional response( in this case holding one's elbow in ice water), 
are stored differently from regular memories and are not only more vivid but 
more easily accessed. 

 Getting the names of people you run into that you know but can't think of 
is greatly facilitated by having a friend/partner who introduces themself 
when they see you are stuck. 

I have always had hell with this so whenever i meet someone i quote the 
inimitable Crazy Carl Hickerson-Bull who said i know 4,000 people and only 
400 names. Then i tell them its entirely possible we've done this before and 
seven or eight more times and i'll probaly have it. 

when i was a young guy i illustrated a series of filmstrips called the 
Sparks Memory course. He recommended that you repeat the name when its 
given, then try and use it at least twice in the ensuing conversation...this 
helps burn it in. Also you can build a mnemonic picture involving the 
syllables of the name and physical attributes of their face. This takes some 
practice but is thoroughly effective.
