lots and lots of explanations for Bush's Iraq adventure
are given, its for the oil, its for Israel, its because of
the neo-conservatives who believe in a new American
empire. but none is entirely convincing.
i gotta new theory: it has absolutely nothing to do
with oil or Israel or high flown neo-conservative
theory about a new American empire.
i suggest that the definitive push to war with
Iraq was Rumsfeld's. we all agree that Bush
is easily led, that's not an issue.
who is Rumsfeld? very interesting background.
he went to New Trier High School like my
friend Bob Charles, said to be better than
Bronx High School of Science or Newton High
School in the Boston suburbs.
at Princeton as an undergraduate, he won
barroom bets by doing one-arm pushups,
did collegiate wrestling and was in Navy
ROTC. after Princeton he flew jets for the
Navy for 2 or 3 years. afterwards he was
elected to the House of Representatives.
He was the youngest Secretary of Defense
in American history (under Ford) and he
is now the oldest Secretary of Defense in
American history. Between those 2 offices
he went into being the CEO of a drug
company and made his pile.
What wa he doing up to 9/11? He was
dragging the military kicking and screaming
from the previous mode of battle to the
new one which is usually called video game
warfare. For example the Army was fighting
for ugrading large calibre artillery and
Rumsfeld was busy bluepencilling it, that
sort of thing.
But when 9/11 happened, the next day
Rumsfeld was pushing Bush towards
doing Iraq (according to Woodward's book).
Why? Proof of concept is why. Rumsfeld
did Iraq in just a few weeks with a minimum
of forces as a proof of concept for video
game warfare. Every manufacturing process
requires proof of concept testing beforehand.
As for after military victory, Iraq is off
Rumsfeld's plate, he is Secretary of Defense,
nothing more.
coldblooded motherfucker aint he?
as he famously said after "victory" when the
Iraqis were looting their own infrastructure,
stuff happens.
