time column field width in ra type programs

i've done this before and have searched the lisr archives  but i can't find it now
when the time column is listed the value ends in *
this means the value won't fit in the size of the field
specifying RA_TIME_FORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T"
wher do i specify the field width?
