radium, pthread and signals problems

Gentle people,
I have to restructure radium(), as it is doing something very bad with
respect to threads and signals.  This will not be difficult, but it will
generate a need to go through some testing.  Hopefully I can have
it up before the end of the weekend.  I am going to wait until then
to put up any new code, so hopefully that will not be inconvenient.
