new code rc.39 on the server

Gentle people,
This new set of code fixes all the outstanding bugs, or attempts to,  
at least,
that are on the list.  It does include changes to the " -t " option  
that I mentioned
in earlier mail, so do please give it a whirl, so to speak.

I have also included mods for Solaris compilation for the clients, so  
if there
are any Solaris people out there, please give this version a go.
