I would recommend looking at the current snapshot of what will be the
1.1 release of RRDtool.  It provides PNG support (in lieu of the proprietary
GIF format), and will be supported more than the 1.0 series.
I've personally found the author receptive to patches, too.

The 1.1 base builds packages clean for RedHat RPM and for Debian.
Unfortunately, where 1.0.48 will include dependent libraries,
1.1. does not include those libs. I've found, since I'm running on Fedora Core Linux,
that the needed libraries are already included, so that hasn't been a
deterrent, in my case.

As was said before "your mileage may vary".
