> Fortunately, I had prepared for this day as Mom's unofficial IT guy, a sort of back-up tech helper to the professional assistance she gets at her Mac shop.

> As a result, little of her data was irretrievably lost. And once she had purchased a current-model aluminum iMac, getting her back up and running was relatively painless.

**** How Many Apple IDs Should Your Family Have? ****
<http://gigaom.com/apple/how-many-apple-ids-should-your-family-have/>
Geoffrey Goetz, GigaOM

> Do consider using one master family account on all devices to manage iTunes purchases, and use that same shared account to track the location of all of your devices. As an added bonus, you could use the calendar, contacts and reminders with this shared family iCloud account as well. Once you have each device configured with these basics, let each family member decide which third-party email service they want. This may well be the best strategy to employ, until Apple sees fit to enable multiple users per device.

Apple ID continues to confuse families around the world.

Andrew Loh

> Going by how politics is still being played by the PAP, we are instead firmly stuck in the old era, in harmful inertia. It does our country no good at all.

> Thus, if we care about how our politics are played out and how politicians are people to be respected, then we must question the man in charge of the ruling party, the man at the helm of the Government.

> Why is he allowing such dirty tactics from his men?

> The poor uncle seems to be forced to carry the signboard higher. Seriously? Just compare that with the WP supporters. Nobody care how you hold the signboard. You can hold it up high or close to your heart. You can wave it or hold it straight. It doesn’t matter. Nobody will dictate how you should hold the signboard.

**** The Silent Foot Soldiers Of The Workers’ Party ****

Andrew Loh, Publichouse.sg

> The message: WP does not take things lying down, and they are willing to go the distance to right a wrong. However, its methods may not be what the PAP expects – such as suing the perceived assailant in the courts. It instead goes to the people to be judged, as it did in 2006, in 2011 and now in 2012. As Mr Yee said with regards to Hougang, it is the people “who are the source of [the WP’s] strength”. It is the people who will pronounce judgement and vindication, or condemnation.

> “The reality is that personal attacks are not what people are interested in. Rather they want solutions for the problems they face in their daily life, from the MRT to jobs.”

> She added, “The PAP just is missing the point in how it engages politically, as it is not adapting to the new reality of different needs and new expectations of a more empowered electorate.”

The PAP, it seems, have no idea to take Singapore to the next level.

**** PAP Apple Polishers ****

Blogging For Myself

> I am often irked by the public apple polishing of PAP assistant branch secretary Lionel de Souza on facebook. I come across him again reading the Sunday Times this morning. Fortunately Khaw Boon Wan responded correctly. Grow up! Everyone works very hard. Hard work only qualifies you to play, not victory. Grassroots leaders like Lionel are not helpful to the PAP's cause. Why don't they get rid of him? What is stopping them? They have too many? To difficult to act? These are dangerous people. Listening too much to their repeated their nonsense eventually leads to belief.

Here's one lesson many PAP members should learn: hard work does not always equate success.
I hope they will remember this lesson when they are formulating policies, help, and support for your fellow not-so-successful Singaporeans.

> Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the Singapore General Hospital were further away from the crash site than Raffles Hospital, which is privately run, but they are better equipped and staffed to handle such cases, said the group of five specialists.

> General manager for Raffles Hospital, Prem Kumar Nair, clarified that the hospital's specialists are not on site at all times, while those in SGH and TTSH had emergency-medicine specialists, surgeons, anaesthetists and radiologists on site, round the clock as minutes matter in emergencies.

<http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/5ba19a90-a748-11e1-921a-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1w2F8aVdV>
Jeremy Grant, Financial Times

> The by-election, in the district of Hougang, was widely seen as a barometer of the PAP’s stewardship of Singapore in the past 12 months in which voter concern over rising immigration and rising living costs have persisted since last year’s election. Singapore is trying to balance the need for foreign workers amid falling local birth rates with the social impact of immigration.

> It came as increasingly active social media in Singapore have helped generate more open discussion of the role of political opposition in the city-state of 5.1m, which has been ruled by the PAP since independence under founder Lee Kuan Yew in 1965.

Even if the party is going to investigate, there are no good reasons to tell the media and the public that they are doing that.

> An opposition candidate has won by a landslide in a Singapore by-election as voters handed a rebuke to the ruling party. The poll was widely seen as a referendum on the government's recent reforms.

> Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other PAP big guns had gone all out to campaign for the ruling party candidate, Desmond Choo, but in the end failed to win control of the ward, which has been in opposition hands for the past 21 years.

> Since the Workers' Party had not applied for a gathering permit, this quiet neighbourhood became the de facto gathering point for Workers' Party supporters from all over Singapore.

> At around 12.30am, Mr Png and his entourage arrived from the back of the coffeeshop, slowly making their way through the crowd for a victory lap.

> For those in attendance, it was not a night they would easily forget.

**** Hougang Wins ****

Singapore Notes

> It is time the government approves the WP's improvement plans under the Neighborhood Renewal Programme and the Home Improvement Programme - both are funded by the taxpayers, not from money raised by two-time loser Demond Choo or the Rotary Club. Grasping at straws, Teo says he doesn't think Hougang is representative of Singapore as a whole. Oh yeah, so what is it about "inclusive" that the scholar Minister doesn't understand?

**** The People Of Hougang Stand Firm! ****
<http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2012/05/people-of-hougang-stand-firm.html>
Diary Of A Singaporean Mind

> Today we have a govt that does not listen to the people. Does not act in the interest of ordinary citizens. It does what it wants then uses propaganda and pork barrel carrots to make us vote for them. They use their authoritarian powers to suppress their opponents and character assassination as a tactic to bring down their opponents. As they do this, we can see how much our fellow Singaporeans have suffered - the elderly who are made to work at an advanced age, the large segment of workers with low stagnant wages, the high burden put the sick and their families. We look around and see our beloved country losing its identity and changing in ways we do not want it to change. We see little progress in our political system as other countries in Asia such as S.Korea, Thailand, Taiwan transform theirs to be free and fully democratic moving away from old authoritarian ways.

Alicia Wong, Today

> As one 52-year-old Hougang resident put it, summing up the sentiment behind the Workers' Party's win last night: "Low Thia Khiang takes care of us very well. As long as he's around, the trunk is there. Upgrading or not, it makes no difference to us anymore. We've adapted to life here already."

**** WP Chief Criticises PAP Election Campaign ****
<http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1203829/1/.html>
Hoe Yeen Nie , Channel NewsAsia

> "This by-election is characterised by baseless attacks, distractions, character assassination and real threat of using government resources as carrot and stick to coerce voters from political freedom of choice. It also saddens me to see the role of mainstream media again becoming a political tool of the PAP in their election campaign."

> After all these years the PAP still regards Singaporeans as incapable of any intelligent thinking. **** Desmond Choo: Better Without PAP Smear? ****
<http://unbrandedbreadnbutter.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/desmond-choo-better-without-pap-smear/>
Unbranded Bread N Butter

> But if PAP knew they were going to lose anyhow, they should have used this opportunity to improve PAP public image by fighting a clean fight and allowing Desmond to judge the chances for himself. I won’t be surprised if Desmond does win back Hougang one day when perhaps the Opposition have made headway in other constituencies and/or WP fields a poor candidate.

If PAP are sure they are going to lose, they should have just not contest the ward. After all, prime minister Lee himself had said the by-election is a distraction from the many problems he had to solve, of which there are indeed many.

**** PAP’s ‘Auntie Killer’ Got ‘Killed’ At The Polls Again ****
<http://newasiarepublic.com/?p=38839>
Faisal Wali, New Asia Republic

> The topmost thing on Png’s mind would be to build on the current support. If he serves the residents of Hougang well, the memories of Yaw will be nothing but a distant one. For the PAP, it has to rethink on firstly its current policies, and secondly, its electoral strategies. Questioning integrity of candidates will not cut it, and in terms of policies debate, it has to start offering real solutions. That is what people want to see, instead of a long talk on why so and so has questionable integrity or abilities.

> The message Hougang voters have sent out loud and clear is this: voters of today don’t appreciate the bullying, lecturing, and phoney moralizing of the old PAP.

> Pritam Singh probably nailed it when he warned the PAP: “those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. The PAP would do well to bear this in mind for 2016.
