Ken Shirriff's Blog

> Disassembling Apple's diminutive inch-cube iPhone charger reveals a technologically advanced flyback switching power supply that goes beyond the typical charger. It simply takes AC input (anything between 100 and 240 volts) and produce 5 watts of smooth 5 volt power, but the circuit to do this is surprisingly complex and innovative.

Daniel Duane, New York Times

> Forty-two years ago, when Alice Waters taught preschool at Berkeley Montessori, I was among her pupils. Waters was fired, she told me later, for wearing see-through blouses. I wish I could remember the snacks. I’m sure they were good, because Waters opened Chez Panisse next, becoming the queen of our town’s most exclusive social court. My parents always reminded me of this the way other Berkeley parents reminded kids about how their entire family was once tear-gassed during an antiwar march.

Chua Chin Leng, My Singapore News

> At betterer than best, there will be one PAP MP in the name of Desmond Choo that would speak for the Hougang people, but would he still vote for whatever the PAP tabled even if he is against it, spoke against it, or if the Hougangkia did not like it. How can any MP be effective when he cannot vote against a motion by his own party? Such MPs will be as ineffective as the bloggers, only can kpkb for a bit of wayang.

> Hougang is immaterial for the short term. Hougang is only meaningful in the longer term. Hougang is like a glimsp of the future, a statement from the people of what they really want or who they want to represent them as the govt of the people. A vote for the PAP is an affirmation that the PAP is the right party to stay and run the country. A vote for the WP is a statement that change is needed, whether a regime change or a change for more opposition MPs to check the govt and have a govt that is more representative of the whole spectrum of the population, not just for the winners and the elite.

**** Worker Disengagement Continues To Cost Singapore ****
<http://businessjournal.gallup.com/content/22720/worker-disengagement-continues-cost-singapore.aspx>
Ashok Gopal, Gallup

> Gallup's research in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia shows that there's still much work to be done before companies can fully capitalize on each employee's potential. If we look beyond this survey and examine the research that Gallup has done with companies across Asia, a telling reality emerges: Very few employees working in Asia today can strongly agree that their companies are meeting their needs on any of the engagement-related expectations mentioned above. Far too many workers struggle with unclear expectations of them, or lack the resources to do their jobs, or feel their current roles don't give them the opportunity to use their talents to the fullest at work.

**** WP Flip-flopped On National Issues: DPM Teo ****
<http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC120521-0000056/WP-flip-flopped-on-national-issues--DPM-Teo>
Amir Hussain, Today

> He said: "The WP had previously argued for less foreign workers, but in the recent Budget debate in Parliament, it suddenly changed its mind. The WP now says we should not reduce foreign workers in several major sectors, major industries."

> Mr Teo also noted that the WP had spoken "loudly and fiercely" on ministerial salaries at the election rallies just last year. "But in Parliament this year, they quietly abandoned their position. They gave up their previous drastic proposals, they didn't explain why," he said.

Also: Will WP Still Serve Hougang If It Loses, Asks Desmond Choo (Amir Hussain, Today): Mr Choo said it was not easy getting over his loss at last year's General Election, especially when he was the worst-performing PAP candidate. "Some asked me, are you not heartbroken? But one auntie took my hand, told me, 'You're still young. We'll support you in future.' She cried ... I cried," he said.

**** LOL: Expelling Yaw “Took Courage” ****

Thoughts Of A Cynical Investor

> Having worked with and mentored Yaw for many a year, he has to accept the responsibility of being partly responsible for choosing Yaw to defend Hougang for the WP. He also has to accept part of the responsibility of the WP’s stonewalling silence and evasion. Finally as leader of the WP, he has to accept responsibility (albeit partially) for a systems failure.

Also: Yaw's Sacking: A 'Brave Move' Or Did WP Realise It Had No Choice? (Amir Hussain, Today): "It's not whether there are bad apples in a political party - there are bound to be some", Mr Teo said. "But it's how you deal with it - whether you deal with it decisively, openly, transparently, or whether you keep quiet because you got no choice; and then reluctantly you sack him."

**** Opposition Can Be The Brakes To Stop The PAP Ferrari From Mowing Down Singaporeans ****

> PAP is powerful and big like the Ferrari, and likes to step on the accelerator to make GDP grow very fast and create high profits for their companies. The cost of living and housing have also rocketed up like a high speed Ferrari.

> The opposition are the brakes of the Ferrari. If the brakes are not working, this Ferrari will go very fast and cannot stop properly. Taking the opposition out of Hougang is like wearing off the brake linings.
