**** China Court: Apple Pays $60M To Settle Ipad Case ****
<http://bigstory.ap.org/article/china-court-apple-pay-60m-settle-ipad-case>
Joe McDonald, Associated Press

> Apple has agreed to pay a Chinese company $60 million to settle a dispute over ownership of the iPad name, a court announced Monday, removing a potential obstacle to sales of the popular tablet computer in the key Chinese market.

> Proview hoped for more money but felt pressure to settle because it needs to pay debts, said a lawyer for the company, Xie Xianghui. He said the company had hoped for as much as $400 million and might still be declared bankrupt in a separate legal proceeding despite the infusion of settlement money.

$60M is still better than $0.

**** Developers Replying To App Store Reviews Is The [Best][Worst] Thing Ever ****
<http://robottuxedo.net/replying-to-app-store-reviews>
Matthew Panzarino

> But the important thing is that there is a serious discussion now being had about this topic, which I feel is an extremely important one, both for Apple as the App Store continues to grow, and to the developers in its ecosystem. I don’t think anyone has the right answers yet, but I think that there are some very smart folks at Apple working hard on the problem, including the ex-Chompites. So I’m cautiously optimistic that we might see some results later this year.

> London is a “great cesspool” into which the loungers and idlers of life irresistibly drain, wrote Arthur Conan Doyle in one of his Sherlock Holmes stories. But it has proved to be a fertile dumping ground, an inspiration for each generation of novelist and every genre of fiction.

> Mr Magnus explained that the FRMC is a committee appointed by the Transport Minister to specifically review the effectiveness of and recommend improvements to the fare review mechanism and the fare adjustment formula.

> The PTC, however, has a broader role of licensing and regulating bus services, bus service operators, transit ticket payment services, as well as to make specific decisions on quantum of fare increases, including changes to concessionary travel schemes.

> A number of psychiatrists and counselors fear that policymakers may be focusing too much on the casinos when it comes to tackling gambling addiction.

> “The casinos have taken more than the necessary attention from other gambling activities,” said Thomas Lee, a gambling counselor at The Resilienz Mind clinic. “We’ve hardly heard (from the government) about the lotteries or horse racing, for example.”

**** STOMP - Stamp Out Bad Practices ****

> The focus of the government as well as society at large when it comes to regulating the media and the (planned) regulation of discourse on the Internet has so far been on a narrow measure of harm done in terms of aggravating statements about politics or race. The Stomp incident, while relatively contained, has suggested that one blindside is the lack of oversight of journalistic practices.

> The writing is on the wall for both pragmatists and socialists who see state intervention as the remedy for our social and economic ills. The future is likely to see the consequences of the working out of globalisation traversing a neo-liberal course. There will probably be rising costs of living; stiff competition for jobs with foreign professionals and workers (and younger Singaporeans); less secure employment and under-employment, especially for women and older people; greater demands placed on young adults to support an ageing population; and the slow but sure effects of climate and environmental change.

Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia

> "We are keeping a very tight watch over the entire budget. Unlike the YOG, the SEA Games is very different. In YOG there are various contractual things that we have to abide by, but for the SEA games itself we have greater control of the choices of vendors and the kind of things that we want to use for the Games," said Mr Chan.

It is easy to deal with ASEAN than with the International Olympic "Big-Business" Committee.

Derek Low, Today

> The issue may not be about the adequacy of remuneration or opening up sufficient channels for dialogue. More fundamentally, are we beginning to lose the "threat perspective" facing Singapore and forget the relevance of NS?

I feel it is not a question of "threat perspective", but fairness. Also, the assumption that conscription is necessary for Singapore must always be challenged.

**** That $50 Raise ****
<http://berthahenson.wordpress.com/2012/07/01/that-50-raise/>
Bertha Harian

> That’s because that much lauded $50 raise advocated by the National Wages Council would put her in a higher-tier bracket for a HDB rental home. That new bracket starts at $801 a month. It was an insightful piece highlighting how one policy change can all be for nothing if other policies do not change as well. So you get $50 more, and you lose more because you are suddenly “richer”. I use the term richer deliberately. Getting $800 a month does not definitely make you rich. In fact TNP quoted an economics professor pointing out that Workfare Income Supplement cut-off is $1,700 a month, an implicit acknowledgement that anything less is hard to live on. The HDB’s response was to talk about flexibility and looking at things case-by-case. Not good enough methinks. Better, as the economist suggested, to base rent as a proportion of income.
