**** Apple Asked Samsung To Pay As Much As $30 Per Android Phone, $40 Per Tablet For Patent Licenses ****
<http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/10/3234909/apple-samsung-patent-royalty-rates>
Chris Ziegler, The Verge

> Apple also proposed a royalty discount structure based on a variety of factors, using the Windows Mobile-based Blackjack II as an example: QWERTY form factor would give a 20 percent discount, Apple patents that Microsoft had already licensed inside Windows Mobile would give another 40 percent, and a cross-licensing deal on Samsung's patents would be 20 percent — a grand total of an 80 percent discount in this particular case (granted, a Blackjack II doesn't bear much resemblance to an iPhone).

I do wonder if Samsung at any point told Apple: we want to license iOS, not patents. Give us that, or we'll just copy every single detail.

> No, the failure to reproduce the next generation is the supreme act of selfishness or despair of the future. The selfish are kicking the can down the road because they do not want kids to bring an early end to their blissful lifestyles; the pessimists view life's pressures to exceed their ability to cope. They do not want to bring kids into an unpleasant world.

> But what’s interesting about LKY’s exhortations to procreate is not what’s being said, but what’s not. For example, he did not say that educated women with pHDs should get boyfriends and settle down. He also did not specifically urge the Chinese to pick up the slack.

Ian Tan, Empty Vessel

> These days, we talk about the woes we are going through with the primary school education system, corrupted by unrealistic standards and “kiasu” parents. We debate about whether we should stop stressing ourselves out trying to figure out today’s education requirements, and just hand our kids over to the mercy of the tuition centers.

Andrew Loh, Publichouse.sg

> Member of Parliament, Inderjit Singh, who had been involved in Economic Review Committee and the Remaking Singapore Committee, fingered the problem - that the government perhaps had "raised expectations" only to later disappoint the public because these expectations were not met.

> "First and foremost," Mr Inderjit told the Straits Times on 11 August, "be sure you are prepared to make significant changes before consulting the public."

> That is good advice and Mr Heng should keep this in mind.
