> Rather than continue to patch a sync system that was wonky to begin with and has only gotten worse, it’s time for Apple to take a step back and re-think device syncing entirely.

Clyde Prestowitz, Foreign Policy

> A more fundamental point, however, is that Apple and other corporations owe their very existence to the society that gives birth to them. Readers must understand that neither corporations nor shareholders create corporations. They are all chartered by government.

**** Mobile-Ad Firms Seek New Ways To Track You ****
<http://www.technologyreview.com/communications/40102/?ref=rss>
Tom Simonite, Technology Review

> This week, a large consortium of mobile-ad firms launched a new technical approach to tracking users of free apps. The consortium says the new method protects users' privacy, and will allow people to opt out if they prefer not to have their behavior logged. That opt-out mechanism would be modeled on those offered by online-ad companies for people who do not want their browsing history used to tailor ads.

> And yet the reputation of modern solitude is puzzling, because the traits enabling a solitary life—financial stability, spiritual autonomy, the wherewithal to buy more dishwashing detergent when the box runs out—are those our culture prizes.

> I guess that’s why it’s often said that in Singapore, everything “just works.” Trains and buses run on time, meetings start on time, your food comes on time, everyone and everything is on time. It was a refreshing departure from “Filipino time,” and I grew to like it immediately.

But, sometimes, the five or ten minutes before a meeting, alone in the meeting room, is when I did the most productive work. :)

联合早报

> 组屋不一定不能高过50层楼,不建太高是因为需要快速电梯和额外防火楼层(fire safety refuge floor),而提供和维持这些额外设施不便宜。

If we put a financial value to a loss of open space, or loss of void decks, maybe the cost of taller HDB apartment blocks may not be that great.

**** Proposal Is Impractical, Say Economists ****
<http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_787113.html>

**** Singapore - A Closed Chapter? ****

Photography & Me

> All male citizens and PRs of Singapore have to serve 2 years of National Service (Army) from the age of 18. Since I happen to be studying here, and because I don't see the need for wasting 2 precious years, which I could spend for studying - for college/university, I decided, considering also my parents' opinions, to go ahead and cancel my PR. NS in Singapore can be really treacherous and tough, and although it might take a big toll on you, it sure does build up your body and character. I'm saying this from hearing my senior friends' experiences serving the army. However, now that I've opted out of it and cancelled my PR, I'm doubtful if I can visit Singapore again - the country I grew up in.

**** Land Capacity In Singapore To Increase ****
<http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1194077/1/.html>
Lynda Hong, Channel NewsAsia

> With Singapore land limited at 710 square kilometres, Mr Khaw said his ministry will also pursue efforts to recycle and optimise land to make the best use of this limited resource.

> But Mr Khaw gave the assurance that Singapore will remain highly liveable and a great place to raise families.
