Lex Friedman, Macworld

With advanced planning, you’ll be ready to start playing with your new tablet practically from the moment you open up the box.

**** Xcode 4 Hands-on: Be Sure To RTFM First <http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/03/xcode-4-hands-on.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss>
John Timmer, Ars Technica

This is one case where RTFM really applies; unless you're willing to spend the time to familiarize yourself with the changes involved and experiment with the interface a bit, the new Xcode will probably get in the way of your productivity. And, even with the best of intentions, it's difficult to avoid having the new interface get very cramped and cluttered.

**** Instapaper 3.0 Gets Social, Deeper Search <http://www.macworld.com/article/158503/2011/03/instapaper_3.html#lsrc.rss_main>
David Chartier, Macworld

The biggest addition to Instapaper 3.0 is a new social layer, but don’t worry—you won’t have to start tweeting and posting and liking if you don’t want to. But if you are the type to share your favorite articles, both Instapaper’s site and apps now offer full-featured integration for Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinboard, and Evernote. If you’re offline, you can create your posts for those networks and Instapaper will queue them to send when you regain a connection.

Anand Lal Shimpi, Brian Klug & Vivek Gowri, Anandtech

Overall, the new design really works - the iPad 2 feels good in hand, and instantly makes its predecessor feel a little clunky. But we didn't just pause our testing to talk about design, there's a lot under the hood of the iPad 2 that demands attention.

And it’s not as though the iPad is the only credible way to design a tablet. There’s room for competition and infinite possibilities for success ... but not until these companies accept some fundamental truths about the tablet market.

**** Writer's Block <http://www.tnr.com/article/books-and-arts/magazine/84531/end-bookstores-amazon-e-book-borders?passthru=YTI3MzgwYmE5M2JlY2ZkM2Q2Y2ZjOWYxMDRmNGFkZDg>
Nicole Krauss, The New Republic

To browse online is to enter into a search that allows one to sail, according to an idiosyncratic route formed out of split-second impulses, across the surface of the world, sometimes stopping to randomly sample the surface, sometimes not. It is only an accelerated form of tourism. To browse in a bookstore, however, is to explore a highly selective and thoughtful collection of the world—thoughtful because hundreds of years of thinkers, writers, critics, teachers, and readers have established the worth of the choices. Their collective wisdom seems superior, for these purposes, to the Web’s “neutrality,” its know-nothing know-everythingness.

**** Gabrielle Hamilton, Cooking With Words <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/books/review/book-review-blood-bones-and-butter-by-gabrielle-hamilton.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>
Frank Bruni, New York Times

It’s hard to think of another American chef who has outdone Gabrielle Hamilton in converting the humblest of stages into the heftiest of reputations. The restaurant she opened in downtown Manhattan in 1999, Prune, has barely enough room for the 30 diners it squeezes in at brunch, lunch and dinner, and despite the reliable presence of dozens of additional customers waiting on the sidewalk, she has either escaped or resisted the itch for expansion that so many of her contemporaries scratch and scratch. Prune has no annex or uptown sibling; there is no Prune Dubai. Just this one cramped, irresistible nook with its scuffed floors, nicked tables and servers in pink.

**** The Summer Without Men By Siri Hustvedt - Review <http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/mar/12/siri-hustvedt-summer-without-men-review?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Justine Jordan, The Guardian

All the characters are in the grip of change: the girls, becoming women; Lola, learning to be a mother; Mia, experiencing that Change we euphemise with a capital letter; and her mother and friends, facing the final inevitable transformation. Selfhood – the limits and lineaments of identity – is Siri Hustvedt's great subject: the way it changes over time, the extent to which it is subject to the force of others, and the influence it brings to bear on the outside world.

**** Other People's Money By Justin Cartwright – Review <http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/mar/12/other-peoples-money-cartwright-review?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+theguardian%2Fbooks%2Frss+%28Books%29>
Alex Clark, The Guardian

Cartwright is a sophisticated enough writer to make the predictability of these characters seem like part of the joke, as if to underline the moribund nature of the world he depicts. And when he succeeds, it's worth it.

**** Churchill, Depression And A Talking Dog <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/books/review/book-review-mr-chartwell-by-rebecca-hunt.html?partner=rss&emc=rss>
Tadzio Koelb, New York Times

One of the three main characters is Winston Churchill; another, Esther, is a library clerk at the House of Commons. The third, her lodger, is an oversize talking dog.

**** The Lobster Underground <http://reason.com/archives/2011/03/10/the-lobster-underground>
Baylen Linnekin, Reason

Whether as a treat for the common man or an excuse to slum it for the well-to-do, the lobster roll was never terribly hip, edgy, or controversial. Until last year, when a Brooklyn artist and chef reinvented the lobster roll as delicious underground performance art.

**** Opposition Parties Need More Than Unity <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC110312-0000069/Opposition-parties-need-more-than-unity>
Mano Sabnani, Today

After all these years, veteran Opposition party leader Chiam See Tong could only present his wife as a replacement for him in Potong Pasir, his long-held singe-seat ward. As for the relatively new Reform Party set up by the late J B Jeyaretnam's son, Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam seems to be losing his key party members quicker than he can replace them.

The Workers Party seems to be doing somewhat better, while the National Solidarity Party has won over a few Reform Party deserters. The Singapore Democratic Party has been rebuilding its ranks after its poor showing in the last GE. However, it remains to be seen if these last three parties can put up good candidates who will be acceptable to the majority of voters.

**** Singapore Cannot Lose 新加坡输不起 <http://singaporealternatives.blogspot.com/2011/03/singapore-cannot-lose.html>
Goh Meng Seng, Singapore Alternatives

Any opposition parties, including NSP, could afford to lose elections, but Singapore cannot afford to lose, to lose the opportunity to send in good and credible people into parliament. I just hope that in the coming days, the negotiation will have fruitful outcome that will serve the Nation's interests as a whole.

**** Cut The President’s Pay <http://yawningbread.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/cut-the-presidents-pay/>
Yawning Bread

Making things even more illogical, the president’s job has nothing to do with the economy, and the explanation doesn’t even pretend that he does. His salary rises because ministers’ salaries rise according to a certain formula (pegged to GDP growth as aforesaid). It’s all got to do with face; it’s got nothing to do with the little work that S R Nathan does. It would be awkward if ministers salaries were to rise above the president’s, so the solution is to let his salary rise too to give cover to ministers’ fat pay cheques.

We’re beginning to get to Animal Farm-style logic here.

**** Think Carefully Before Offering More Procreation Handouts <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_644323.html>
Ng Ya Ken, Straits Times

For one thing, we are unsure about the clear correlation of the baby supply curve to a spike in cash incentives because money is but one of the factors. The effect of additional handouts may also be short-lived. The quantum may have to be raised from time to time.

It is better to play safe and not go for one hefty increase.

**** Tablet & Pen <http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/d1ab9614-4b64-11e0-89d8-00144feab49a.html?ftcamp=rss>
Robin Yassin-Kassab, Financial Times

The presence of the anthologiser is felt throughout – pleasantly so. Aslan’s introductions and chronologies give historical structure and social context to the pieces, and succeed in making this “not an anthology to be tasted in disparate bits but rather a single sustained narrative to be consumed as a whole”. It’s a physically beautiful book which is also compulsively readable.

**** 5 Fatal Mistakes Opposition Parties Must Avoid … <http://singaporegirl.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/5-fatal-mistakes-opposition-parties-must-avoid/>
Food Fuels Me To Talk...

Opposition big wigs tempted to leave the security of their roots should pause and ponder: why haven’t MM Lee Kuan Yew and SM Goh ever wanted to leave Tanjong Pagar and Marine Parade to try their luck elsewhere? Because, silly, that’s their home base! That’s a lesson Messrs Chiam and Low should take to heart.

**** Blink And You’ll Miss President’s $890,700 Pay Raise <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/blink-and-youll-miss-presidents-890700-pay-raise/>
The Online Citizen

The President’s pay was approved on the last day of the Budget Debates with nary a debate.

Seah Chiang Nee, The Star

Singaporeans are worried that every time a private specialist doctor charges an astronomical fee, it will set or re-set new benchmarks for ordinary citizens.

Overwhelmingly, Singaporeans consider Lim’s fee was excessive despite the patient’s considerable wealth and her demands to be treated in Brunei by no one but Dr Lim.

目前,除了新加坡民主联盟和工人党对该区兴趣浓厚,人民自由民主党也有意加入战况,分得选票一杯羹。

**** Feeling The Tremors <http://singaporedesk.blogspot.com/2011/03/feeling-tremors.html>
Singapore Notes

Then in December 2010, suddenly forgetting about the "there is no provision" part, ICA wanted $100 to process an application for citizenship. Tired of the charade, Ogawa submitted to the blackmail by paying up on 18 February 2011, and the application was swiftly approved 10 days later. So much for the "There is no provision under the Singapore Constitution for reinstatement of citizenship blah, blah, blah...."

**** Is Mediacorp Shutting Out The SDP In Reports? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/is-mediacorp-shutting-out-the-sdp-in-reports/>
Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

Of all the political parties in Singapore, the SDP is recognized as the most active online, with regular daily updates on its website, including numerous videos of its activities, and articles on the party’s stand on various issues. It also has active Facebook pages and Twitter feeds. Offline, the party too has been working the ground. It has conducted events, activities and walkabouts in the constituencies since the last election and even earlier. This author can’t recall any reports in the mainstream media about any of these.

With the elections possibly just weeks away, it is incumbent upon the mainstream media that it fulfills its responsibility of fairly informing voters of the various parties’ activities and stands on issues. It should not, indeed it must not, “play politics” or be beholden to any political party, ruling or otherwise.

**** Stateless Man Finally A S’pore Citizen <http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2011/03/12/stateless-man-finally-a-spore-citizen/>

Eventually, Ryuju gave in and paid the S$100 fee on 18 February. Ten days later, his application was approved.

**** Shadow Budget Reflects The SDP's 3 Cs <http://yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4608-shadow-budget-reflects-the-sdps-3-cs>
Singapore Democratic Party

We make no apology for proposing a vision that is diametrically opposite to the PAP's because we see the current policies of relying on cheap labour and easy money from overseas as fundamentally dishonest and ultimately unsustainable. Compassion has long been a dirty word in the PAP's world, one where self-centredness and economic growth at all cost predominate. We must make compassion a decent concept again, one that is real and part of our lives.

More than a catch phrase, we want Singaporeans to know that competence, constructiveness, and compassion are qualities that we the Singapore Democrats embody and ones that we will put into practice in our endeavour to serve this nation and lead it to a new and better future.

**** Unemployed Are “Hardcore, Voluntarily Unemployed” – Dr Tan Khee Giap <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/unemployed-in-singapore-are-%E2%80%9Chardcore-voluntarily-unemployed%E2%80%9D/>
Deborah Choo, The Online Citizen

Dr Tan said that the Workforce Development Authority (WDA) should continue to refer jobs to Singaporeans, depending on their productivity and skills set. However, he also stressed the importance of workers’ attitudes. He called for the authorities to publish a quarterly report to note how many times the worker was referred a job, and monitor how many times the particular worker rejected it.
