**** Reading The Contents Of A ZIP File In OS X <http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20040289-263.html>
Topher Kessler, CNET

Uncompressing the files is as simple as double-clicking them, which will expand the contents right next to the original archive. While this is useful, when handling these ZIP archives you might wish to see the files inside them without uncompressing them.

Jeff Porten, Macworld

Cleverfiles has released Disk Drill 1.1, a new drive utility that preemptively protects your disk data and provides tools for data recovery in the event of a crash or accidentally deleted files. Disk Drill is perhaps most notable in its agnosticism about drive formats: it can handle crashed drives in Mac's own HFS+ format as well as Windows FAT and NTFS and lost data on solid state cards used in portable electronics.

**** Where Apple Went Wrong With Free Apps <http://www.manton.org/2011/03/where_apple.html>
Manton Reece

And now I wonder if Apple hasn't been backpedaling ever since, trying to make up for that mistake: free apps are a burden. iAd was the first correction, because a share of revenue from free apps was going to Google instead of Apple. In-app purchase is the next correction, because real value can be delivered in a free app with transactions handled elsewhere.

**** Book Review: 'Conversations With Scorsese' <http://www.latimes.com/features/books/la-et-book-20110307,0,613826.story?track=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+features%2Fbooks+%28Los+Angeles+Times+-+Books%29>
Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Though billed as a conversation, it often reads more like a lecture series as the men discuss each of Scorsese's feature films, a smattering of his documentaries, his views on editing, music, color, storyboarding and everything else in the filmmaking process.

As anyone who's ever caught the filmmaker on TV or in person knows, everything about him seems irrepressible — his humor, his passion, that rubber-band grin, the Buddy Holly horn rims and those caterpillar brows.

**** The Ashtray: The Ultimatum (Part 1) <http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/the-ashtray-the-ultimatum-part-1/>
Errol Morris, New York Times

It was April, 1972. The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N. J. The home in the 1950s of Albert Einstein and Kurt Gödel. Thomas Kuhn, the author of “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” and the father of the paradigm shift, threw an ashtray at my head.

**** "Emily And Einstein": The Dog With The Soul Of A Man <http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2011/03/07/emily_and_einstein_linda_francis_lee/index.html>
Eloisa James, Salon

"Emily and Einstein"is a novel that dances between genres: women's fiction, magical realism, romance, dog lovers' fiction (surely its own genre by now). The novel doesn't fit into any neat package, and Linda Francis Lee employs these incongruities, including a paranormal flourish, to deepen her story's emotional punch.

**** For The Repeatedly Unsuccessful ... <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC110308-0000195/For-the-repeatedly-unsuccessful-,,,>
Tay Koon Quie, Housing & Development Board, Today

In view of their repeated unsuccessful applications in BTO projects in non-mature estates, HDB recently offered them some balance flats from a previous sale exercise in Sengkang for their selection.

Ms Lim and her fiance turned down HDB's offer, saying that the flats offered were inconveniently located. This was in spite of the fact that they had earlier applied for a BTO project there. Instead, they requested for direct allocation of a flat at other locations, which HDB was unable to accede to.

**** School Sports Is About Winning, Not Passion <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_642541.html>
Yee Jenn Jong, Straits Times

When a school offers a sport, it wants students to pursue it for the sake of winning competitions. Students who want to sign up for the sheer joy of playing the sport but do not make the grade are sidelined.

We are sending a wrong signal to children.

**** Remove Uncertain Component Of Means Testing In MediShield Use <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_642538.html>

The Ministry of Health should allow patients to pay a slightly higher premium to be excluded from this pro-ration formula. This will allow for greater transparency and give them more certainty on the coverage under basic MediShield.

**** From Civil Service To Political Service <http://akikonomu.blogspot.com/2011/03/from-civil-service-to-political-service.html>

Senior civil servants are a dead-end product of Singapore's meritocratic system. Do not expect solutions or initiatives from them. I strongly urge the electors to strongly reject PAP GRC slates that include recent senior civil servants.

**** MM Lee ‘Stands Corrected’ On Malay-Muslim Integration <http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2011/03/08/mm-lee-stands-corrected-on-malay-muslim-integration/>
Alicia Wong, Yahoo!

Chairman of the Association of Muslim Professionals Nizam Ismail also welcomed the news. He said the “retraction” was a “necessary” move. ”The issue of integration is an important one especially for a young, heterogeneous and cosmopolitan nation-state. Integration still remains a work in progress,” he said.

**** Is GE 2011 About PAP Leadership Renewal? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/is-ge-2011-about-pap-leadership-renewal/>
Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

So, when we go to the polls, we should not be too concerned about the PAP’s leadership renewal. The last five years have shown that the PAP’s policies are hurting, rather than helping, Singaporeans.

Housing policies is one. Healthcare another. The many changes to the CPF yet another. And of course, the PAP’s immigration policy.

The question therefore is: Do we want more of this kind of leadership? That is what Singaporeans will be voting for if they cast their ballot for the PAP.

**** Harry Hard Truth <http://alternetviews.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/harry-hard-truth/>

It’s election time. What would most politician do before and during an election? They start sayings things that are soothing and pleasing to the voters.

If the elections weren’t near, I seriously doubt that Harry will issue a press statement on the issue.

**** How The Poor Cope With Rising Food Prices In Singapore <http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2011/03/how-poor-cope-with-rising-food-prices.html>
Diary of A Singaporean Mind

When poor folks cannot afford to pay for the electricity bills, the govt does not see our high electricity tariffs [2nd highest in the world] as the problem but see the way the poor budget their expenditure as the problem - that is why it conducts so many "Talking Dollars and Sense" workshop of the poor instead of giving them more direct aid. When the cost of living goes up, our govt solution is for the poor to use less electricity and water, eat less food and stay within budget.

**** Singapore's Lee Retracts Controversial Muslim Remarks <http://www.timeslive.co.za/world/article954927.ece/Singapores-Lee-retracts-controversial-Muslim-remarks>
DPA

Government leaders have distanced themselves from the elder Lee's controversial remarks, and have praised Muslims' efforts to integrate.

With general elections widely expected to be called before June, the government has been eager not to alienate Muslims, who represent around 15 per cent of the island state's population of five million.

**** On The Ground, Strangely Depopulated <http://yawningbread.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/on-the-ground-strangely-depopulated/>
Yawning Bread

Since we ourselves tend to be within those nodes, pathways and time segments as everybody else, then almost every minute of the day, we find ourselves sharing the same spaces with strangers. It’s crowded, we say. Partly, it’s the way our physical economy is designed, but partly too, it lies in the choices we make. Why was the food court opposite Compass Point four-fifths empty? Why is the field never trod upon?

**** Why Insist On Holding Maids To Lower Standard Of Rights? <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC110308-0000387/Why-insist-on-holding-maids-to-lower-standard-of-rights?>
Sha Najak, Today

I have come across many negative comments about how domestic workers get a lot of free time, buy clothes and enjoy luxuries during their day off. Why do we have this sort of mentality towards domestic workers? Is the very nature of housework something we all find degrading and hence, subject to humiliation? Are we trying to say to our younger generation that housework is a low-status job and those who do it should have more limited rights and stricter rules?

**** Where’s The Apology, MM? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/03/where’s-the-apology-mm/>
Andrew Loh, The Online Citizen

It is telling that MM Lee’s statement does not include an apology. Nor did he issue a retraction in January when the book was first launched. Indeed, the book was widely-promoted, both here and abroad. And the press, particularly the Straits Times, carried several articles in praise of the book. Remember, this is not the first time that MM Lee has disparaged or questioned the Malay-Muslims’ loyalty or religious practice in Singapore.

Further, how out-of-touch is MM Lee, given that he himself has admitted, in this episode, that he is “out of date”? Should we wait for his next “hard truth” to stir more unease and discomfort before we say it is time for him to leave?

In the meantime, where is the apology to the Malay-Muslim community, MM Lee?
