**** iOS Devs Put Out A Call To Unite Against Lodsys, Other Patent Trolls <http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/ios-devs-put-out-a-call-to-unite-against-lodsys-other-patent-trolls.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss>
Jacqui Cheng, Ars Technica

On Monday, renowned iOS developer Mike Lee announced the Appsterdam Legal Defense Team, which will be made up of indie developers fighting patent trolls as a single unit and funded by contributions from participating companies. The goal, aside from the obvious one of being free from frivolous patent lawsuits, is to become "the ants of East Texas, minding their business until someone invades their anthill."

**** Core I5 MacBook Airs Approach Perfection <http://www.macworld.com/article/161434/2011/08/macbook_air_2011.html#lsrc.rss_main>
Jason Snell, Macworld

At just a hair below three pounds, the 13-inch MacBook Air will probably hit the sweet spot for users accustomed to larger computer screens. But for my money, the 11-inch Air is the real winner here. At $999, it's now holding down the low-price end of the Apple laptop market. It will almost certainly be the laptop of choice for students, and they'll love its light weight and small size.

**** Why “Cherry-Picking” Is Good For Commuters <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/08/why-“cherry-picking”-is-good-for-commuters/>
Hazel Poa, National Solidarity Party, The Online Citizen

Lucrative routes are lucrative because demand is high, and more commuters are packed into each bus. “Cherry-picking” by multiple operators would mean more buses along these routes leading to shorter waiting times, less congestion in the buses and hence more comfortable rides, and more competitive pricing.

Meanwhile, the licence fee for the “lucrative” routes can be used to subsidize the operation of non-profitable routes, to ensure the continuation of these services.

**** Accept EP’s Role Or Don’t Stand <http://trulysingapore.wordpress.com/2011/07/31/accept-eps-role-or-dont-stand/>
Yours Truly Singapore

Having a eunuch president who is gagged and cannot speak out for justice will not help maintain Singapore’s image and status globally. It will only bring shame and dishonour to Singapore both locally and globally.

**** Aljunied Town Council: WP Takes Over On Monday <http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_697096.html>
Teo Wan Gek & Cai Haoxiang, Straits Times

The most significant change ahead of the handover was the May 27 merger of the town councils for Aljunied GRC and neighbouring WP-held Hougang, which the party said was to take advantage of economies of scale.

The new Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, chaired by Aljunied GRC MP and WP chairman Sylvia Lim, has taken on all existing agreements of the Aljunied Town Council.

**** Medisave Double Speak <http://mysingaporenews.blogspot.com/2011/08/medisave-double-speak.html>
Chua Chin Leng, My SIngapura (Singapore)

How much money is kept away from the people by this scheme? At 36k per head, at 2m contributors, that is $72b! This is money that rightfully belongs to the people and must be returned to the people.

**** Is Young PAP Doing Precisely What They Had Accused TOC Of Doing? <http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/08/is-young-pap-doing-precisely-what-they-had-accused-toc-of-doing/>
Siew Kum Hong, The Online Citizen

Just like the YP, we would like all actors and players to be fair, reasoned and civil. But unlike the YP, we do not think that holding a different point of view is necessarily toxic in and of itself. The so-called “new normal” in Singapore politics shows that a plurality and diversity of views and perspectives exists. It is disappointing that the YP does not seem to recognize this.

Also unlike the YP, we decline to take the low road by demonizing others and ascribing sinister motives to their actions. Because Singaporeans do deserve better, and we intend to continue doing our best to place their interests first.

**** Why Elected President Must Be The People's Voice <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_696991.html>
Tan Cheng Bock, Straits Times

Let me state in no uncertain terms that the EP must be the voice of the people as he is elected by all Singaporeans. Or else, whose voice is he representing?

De Leviathan @ Sg

The real practical issue is the Govt should not view an "activist" EP in the defensive as if he is an "opposition". This will not only be an obstacle in view of the EP process, but also the political process, just like the way it wants to view the opposition.

**** Projectile That Landed On Plate Was From NDP <http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_697097.html>

In view of public safety, the NDP Fireworks Committee has decided to stop the use of fireworks that contain the cylindrical objects, said Col Kek.

This came after a spokesman for the committee had earlier denied that the grey projectile, which contained some black, powdery substance and appeared slightly burnt, was part of the NDP fireworks when alerted to the incident by The Straits Times.
