Dan Moren, Macworld

Overall, iOS 4.1 is a worthy update that packs both new capabilities as well as improvements to existing features—and all for free, too. With the performance improvements, even iPhone 3G users will find something to like in 4.1.

**** Ping Is Apple’s iTunes For Everything <http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/09/08/ping-is-apples-itunes-for-everything/>
John Biggs, Crunchgear

Ping isn’t perfect. I’m surprised its so clunky right now. However, it does point to better things down the road.

**** iPhone 3G Doesn't Make The Cut For Apple's Game Center <http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2368882,00.asp>
Mark Hachman, PC Magazine

Apple's Game Center - part of the company's iOS 4.1 update excludes the older iPhone from its hardware compatibility list, even though the phone can theoretically run Apple's latest iOS version.

**** iPhone Hacker Discovers A New Jailbreaking Exploit; To Fix It, Apple Must Ship New Hardware <http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/09/08/iphone-hacker-discovers-a-new-exploit-for-jailbreaking-if-apple-wants-to-fix-it-new-hardware-has-to-be-shipped/>
Greg Kumparak, Mobilecrunch

The exploit in question here seems to focus around the boot rom, which, as you might have guessed from the preamble, is one of these non-rewritable components. Apple can patch up this exploit in any new hardware before it leaves the factory (they’ve shipped revised hardware as a result of similar exploits in the past), but once that boot rom is flashed and the phone is assembled, it’s a done deal.

ANdy Ihnatko, Chicago Sun-Times

I’ve had time to use the new Shuffle, Nano, and Touch and I declare the 2010 editions to be a mixed bag. One is a retreat back that amounts to a big step forward; another is set of “under the hood” upgrades that adds true muscle car performance; and the third is ...

... um ...

Quite creative.

**** Tech Check:Apple Pulls Back The Curtain For One Company <http://www.cnbc.com/id/39070555?par=ft>

Tim Rutten, Los Angeles Times

"Bob Dylan in America," a new biography of the singer-songwriter by distinguished cultural, political historian Sean Wilentz, gives an enjoyably thorough, convincing explanation why Dylan's new music has gone on finding new audiences ever since he burst upon the New York folk scene of the early 1960s, fresh from the iron range of northern Minnesota and ferociously ambitious for his art.

The government is investigating the provision of free bus rides in Singapore to the two integrated resorts by their operators.

The probe, announced on Wednesday by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), is to establish that Singaporeans are not targetted and encouraged to go to the casinos at the integrated resorts (IRs).

**** We Need Commitment For Long Run <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC100909-0000058/We-need-commitment-for-long-run>
Today

For a PR to spend 20 to 30 years earning money in Singapore, and then go back to their hometown to retire (and spend the money earned in Singapore), it does no justice to Singapore's economy in the future.

**** Nation Demands Proper English: Not US, But Singapore Wants Better English <http://www.nationalledger.com/lifestyle/article_272634596.shtml>
Cyndi James, National Ledger

One nation is demanding its citizens speak better English. While many in the US believe it should be America demanding better spoken English from its citizens and immigrants, it is the country of Singapore that is demanding better English be spoken.

**** In Wired Singapore Classrooms, Cultures Clash Over Web 2.0 <http://chronicle.com/article/In-Wired-Singapore-Classrooms/124328/>
Jeffrey R. Young, Chronicle Of Higher Education

Dozens of freshmen at Singapore Management University spent one evening last week learning how to "wiki," or use the software that lets large numbers of people write and edit class projects online. Though many said experiencing a public editing process similar to that of Wikipedia could prove valuable, some were wary of the collaborative tool, with its public nature and the ability to toss out or revise the work of their classmates.

Why is that so bad? It puts students in the awkward position of having to publicly correct a peer, which can cause the corrected person to lose face.

**** PAP Must Unambiguously Say It Will Stop 6.5 M Pop. Plan <http://yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/4104-pap-must-unambiguously-say-it-will-stop-65-m-pop-plan>
Singapore Democrat Party

The national development minister himself was very clear that 6.5 million was the target. Mr Mah posted an editorial on the PAP's website and unambiguously entitled it "Why we need 6.5 million people". It was not "Why we need 6.5 million people as a planning parameter".

If it is indeed not the government's plan to have the population reach 6.5 million then Mr Mah must, like his cabinet colleague Mr Ng Eng Hen who apologised and withdrew his statement about the weighting of Chinese language in school results, renounce his own statement.

Leong Wee Keat, Today

When contacted, NTU dean of students Lok Tat Seng said: "Every year, we disseminate information on the dos and don'ts of Internet usage as a regular reminder to our students. The new academic year has just started, hence it's an appropriate time to disseminate the guidelines."

NTU did not respond, however, to MediaCorp's queries on why students needed the university's written approval to create Web pages or blogs touching on politics and religion.

The Temasek Review

The PAP should stop arguing over semantics and finding silly excuses to absolve itself from blame. If PAP leaders have any sense of shame in them left, they should acknowledge their mistakes and offer an unreserved public apology to all Singaporeans instead of dismissing their concerns as mere trivial complaints.

**** Better Traffic Management, The Dutch Way? <http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC100909-0000133/Better-traffic-management,-the-Dutch-way>
Leong Wee Keat, Today
