**** Review: Mail 4.3 <http://rss.macworld.com/click.phdo?i=821966ce2e8a5e7318a1bdd61c2c2094>
Nathan Alderman, Macworld

Mail 4.3 offers no earth-shattering upgrades, just the same dependable, well-crafted, easy-to-use experience it always has. Considering that it was and still is the best mail client for the Mac, that lack of radical change is definitely a good thing.

Jonathan Seff, Macworld

Although I use it for many different purposes—checking e-mail, ordering from Amazon, catching up on Twitter, controlling one of the Macs in the other room—what I’ve really noticed is how the iPad has changed how and what I read.

More TV shows and movies may be coming to tablet computers like Apple Inc.'s iPad—for those who pay to watch.

At least seven of the ten largest subscription-TV providers in the U.S. are building new tablet-computer applications that offer select TV shows and movies to their existing subscribers, often for little or no additional fee.

A midlevel Apple manager was arrested and accused of accepting more than $1 million in kickbacks from half a dozen Asian suppliers of iPhone and iPod accessories, according to a federal indictment unsealed Friday and a separate civil suit.

It might sound like a lot of work for lunch, but as we’ve seen with the proliferation of online gaming on sites like Facebook, adding a gaming and competitive aspect to an everyday experience, like lunch, could incentivize customers to promote 4Food online.

**** Boxer, Beetle By Ned Beauman | Book Review <http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/~r/theguardian/books/rss/~3/6nr5T2yUhRU/boxer-beetle-ned-beauman-review>
Scarlett Thomas, The Guardian

What follows is a gripping and clever story, as Kevin reconstructs the events that led to the letter from Hitler, and uncovers the tragically doomed love affair between the eugenics-obsessed entomologist Dr Erskine (he provides the beetles) and the Jewish boxer Seth Roach.

Sam Jordison, The Guardian

These scribbles in the margins already seem like messages from a dying age. Will the next generation of writers leave similar guides to the workings of their minds for the future? Perhaps – but not in a format we can currently comprehend.

**** Chilled To The Bone <http://feeds.nytimes.com/click.phdo?i=c8a73ac050e4d68f32e90f2a73bae63b>
Stacey D’erasmo, New York Times

In “I Curse the River of Time,” set in 1989, three monumental events twine around one another in Arvid Jansen’s penumbral soul. His 15-year marriage is dissolving, his mother is dying of cancer and the Berlin Wall is tumbling down. The parallels are obvious — worlds are ending, internally and externally — but the analogies Petterson draws among these dramatic endings are not. Instead of describing the crash and slam of destruction, Petterson locates and threads his story along the meridian of suspension between one life, one world, and another. His tale lives in the liminal, nauseating space where you don’t know who you are anymore or what will become of you.

**** Misunderstandings About The Singapore Constitution <http://siewkumhong.blogspot.com/2010/08/misunderstandings-about-singapore.html>
Siew Kum Hong

The outcome was not in the least bit surprising to me. The Constitution is quite clear -- the President has no discretion on clemency applications, but is instead required to act in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet. To my mind, this judgment is entirely correct in law.

The President (just like the Queen) has no discretion and must act in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet. A constitutional crisis ensues if the President fails or declines for any reason to act in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet.

**** Fare System Misnomer <http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC100814-0000051/Fare-system-misnomer>
Stephen Tan Heng Chua, Today

Commuting utilises both tangible and intangible resources - fuel/electricity (for operating motor vehicles, and trains) and time (a resource managed and "owned" by the traveller). Is it fair that commuters be penalised under this new charging system should they decide to take the shortest route, albeit not the fastest?

After all, the PTC calls it a distance-based fare system. The time taken to complete a journey is irrelevant, belongs to the commuter, and is up to him/her to save or squander.

**** Slow To Make Fare Refund <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/OnlineStory/STIStory_565958.html>
Wee Eng Leong, Straits Times

The LTA should be fair to travelling passengers by drawing up accurate distance markers. I hope it will look into these instances of overcharging and ensure that all bus fare scanners are in tip-top condition.

**** Offer Volunteers A Decent Meal, At Least <http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/OnlineStory/STIStory_565945.html>
Leong Sze Hian, Straits Times

Since volunteers are not paid, I think the least that organisers could do is provide them with decent meals. As Singapore is hosting the first Youth Olympic Games, which will be reported by media internationally, such news does not bode well for Singapore's reputation.

**** Book Review: Once A Jolly Hangman <http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2638&Itemid=195>
Ben Bland, Asia Sentinel

Using a mixture of publicly available legal material and interviews with sources from different parts of Singapore's justice system, including extensive interviews with the former chief executioner, he seemingly does enough to convince even proponents of the death penalty that it is time to reassess the way Singapore handles capital cases.

While the government's latest act of repression may appear at first sight to have backfired, all the attention generated by Shadrake's arrest sends a clear message to Singaporeans: delve into sensitive issues such as the death penalty at your peril.

**** Cabinet Has Power To Pardon <http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_566244.html>
Rachel Lin, Straits Times

THE High Court yesterday dismissed an unprecedented petition for a judicial review of the clemency process, lodged by the lawyer of convicted Malaysian drug trafficker Yong Vui Kong.

In doing so, it ruled that the power to grant a pardon lies with the Cabinet and not the President, and rejected Mr M. Ravi's petition for an indefinite stay of execution.

**** Law Minister's Comments On Convicted Drug Trafficker Misrepresented <http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1075233/1/.html>
Hoe Yeen Nie, Channel NewsAsia

Law minister K Shanmugam said Singapore's constitutional provision for presidential pardons is similar to what's practised in countries like the UK, Australia and Malaysia.

"There have been many misrepresentations about what I said. Those were repeated several times and continued even after Ministry of Law issued a clarification. Some people seem to have difficulties with the facts even after the clarification was issued, and the High Court has dealt with it," he said.
