*** Profit/Loss Versus Bus/MRT Fares
Heng-Cheong Leong

Let's play a little game. Let's say SBS Transit invested money in publishing commuter newspaper, and lost a lot of money. Or maybe SMRT Corp invested money in setting up an advertising agency, and lost a lot of money. Let's say the loss is so significant that the entire company combined is now not making any profits. Can SBS Transit or SMRT Corp justify raising bus and MRT fares because they've lost money on publishing and advertising?

I hope it's obvious that the answer is a resounding No.

Now let's reverse the game. Does the fact that SBS Transit and SMRT Corp are making profit justifies not raising bus and MRT fares?
