Many thanks to Noam, Bernd and Nicolas for their fruitful remarks. Yes,
I understand more clearly now why it
is important to have a "check" concept
in some fairy variants: because it is more
fun! 
(isn't this the ultimate argument?)
Now, I'm sure you'll agree that in some
other variants it might be "more fun"
not to have to deal with that (hum, is it
so sure? I'm perhaps a bit too affirmative
here -- as I don't have any example 
popping into my mind right now...)
Anyway, thanks to all for the feed-back .
