Jhon ,Please explain me why it should work. What should be the difference in
getting power switched by the cable in stead of the ignition switch? Jan flying

Have you tried the following:
Pull the positive battery cable
Insert key in and turn to ignition
Reconnect battery
Turn key to off
Wait for warning sound to stop
Try to start

again. I have a 1990 500SL which had symtoms not unlike yours (But it did run)
all sorts of seemingly unconnnected failures ,lots of advice on here, but
eventually traced to one fuse in the main fuse box in the engine compartment
having mechanicly failed (Not burned out). On mine the hood wouldnt work nor the
indicators or the door windows unless the drivers door was open plus a few more
seemingly separate systems.

window operator fuses have blown, the roof will not go down. This can also
inhibit the starting of the car depending on what other fuses have blown (or
been dislodged). On the circuit drawing, is there a loop between the car seat
belt circuit and the ignition circuit that needs to be made prior to ignition
power being supplied to the relay?
