[R129 SL] Defective Reverse Gear

Evening all,
1993/94 500 with recalcitrant reverse gear.
Goes forward just fine but when selecting reverse takes a number of seconds before take up and then provides about 2% power - not even managing to climb a slight incline. 
Agent (who serviced it 5K ago) says gearbox must come out.
Any alternatives???
