[R129 SL] R129 remote failure

I had the same problem shortly after I bought my 97 SL500 three years ago.  I ended up taking the car to the dealer who charged me something incredible like $450 to check the car's security system, only to then tell me the problem was the key itself.  After ordering and receiving the key (another $350, Canadian prices mind you), everything worked fine.  If only they ordered the spare key first like they knew I needed...

  I think my key remote has lost its mind and now refuses to communicate with the car.  Now I have to revert to locking and unlocking my 1996 SL 500 manually (I had almost forgot how to do that).  I changed the batteries in the key remote (no luck) and I went to the owner's manual and went through the reprogramming sequence (still no luck).

   

  Does anyone out there know what else I can try before I run it in to the dealer and run up a bill...??
