Sadly, i'm going to run with the hardtop on for  a
while and put the problem off until later.

Living in Texas gives you lot's more top down time this Fall.  The  'fix' is 
easy, takes less than an hour and will run you $75 to do both front  latch 
cylinders.  Let me know if you want the instructions/pictures to do  this job.
