[R129 SL] Side Vents

The R129 model, as well of some other MB types, have a side vent behind  each 
front wheel well. I know these had a function on the old 300SL models, but  
what function, if any, do they have on the R129 series? Does the function vary  
with the model (e.g. SL320, SL500, SL600)? Is the function controlled by the  
car? Anyone know?
